There have been a number of discussions in recent weeks in the next generation of display technology that Apple used in a new iPhone. Apple is using LCDs for its smartphones, and while waiting for the iPhone family in July 2016 to hold an LCD, 2017 iPhones seem ready to switch to OLED for the next 'S' devices.

According to reports, Apple has been with LCD screens because of problems in production costs, longevity, and production. These issues have decreased over time to the point where Apple is willing to tolerate the use of OLED display panels iPhone. These be from LG and Samsung (Reuters informs and others), and is expected to Samsung will take the bulk of the order. This, in part, be some compensation to Samsung, which can lose to TSMC for the supply A10 SoC System to feed the iPhone 7 and associated tablets.

A10 TSMC design uses techniques designed to minimze the vertical height of the components in the chipset, allowing Apple maintain the circuit board as thin as possible. That suggests that it is still thin on the Cupertino, and OLED will be incorporated into that ethos - in general OLED screens are thinner than LCD assemblies that no backlight is required. While many would like Apple to use the extra space for more battery capacity, most likely saved on the device design volume will result in a more fashionable smartphone thinner (and sales of battery box Apple smart abominable).
